Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 2025
MeraIndia ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting your personal data and respecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights under UK data protection law, including the UK GDPR.
1. Who we are
MeraIndia is a community discovery platform for the UK Indian diaspora. Our website is available at meraindia.co.uk.
For privacy enquiries, please contact us at [email protected].
2. What data we collect
We collect the following categories of personal data:
- Account information: When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and (optionally) a profile photo. This is handled by our authentication provider, Clerk.
- Profile preferences: If you save a preferred city or display name in your profile settings, we store these in our database so we can personalise your experience.
- User-submitted content: When you submit an event or listing, we collect the details you provide (title, description, contact name, contact email, and other event/listing information). Your name and email are stored to allow us to follow up if needed.
- Saved items: If you bookmark events or listings, we store a record of which items you have saved, linked to your account.
- Usage data: We may collect basic analytics about how the site is used (e.g. page views). We do not use third-party advertising trackers.
3. How we use your data
We use your personal data for the following purposes:
- To create and manage your account
- To display and moderate community-submitted content
- To personalise your experience (e.g. preferred city filter)
- To communicate with you about your submissions or enquiries
- To improve and maintain the platform
The legal basis for processing is our legitimate interests in operating the platform, and — for account creation — contract performance (providing the service you signed up for).
4. Third-party services
We use the following third-party services to operate MeraIndia. Each has its own privacy policy and data processing terms.
- Clerk: Authentication and account management. Clerk stores your account credentials securely. Privacy policy ↗
- Neon (PostgreSQL): Our primary database, hosted on Neon's serverless PostgreSQL platform. Your profile and content data is stored here. Privacy policy ↗
- Cloud storage: Images uploaded with event and listing submissions are stored in object storage provided by Replit.
5. Cookies
MeraIndia uses cookies primarily for authentication. When you sign in, Clerk sets a session cookie to keep you logged in across page visits. This cookie is strictly necessary for the service to function.
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies. If we introduce any additional cookies in future, we will update this policy and seek your consent where required.
6. Data retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. If you request deletion of your account, we will remove your personal data within a reasonable timeframe, except where we are required to retain it by law.
Content you have submitted to the platform may remain published after account deletion unless you also request its removal.
7. Your rights under UK GDPR
As a data subject in the UK, you have the following rights:
- Right of access: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to rectification: You can ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Right to erasure: You can request that we delete your personal data ("right to be forgotten").
- Right to restriction: You can ask us to limit how we use your data in certain circumstances.
- Right to data portability: You can request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- Right to object: You can object to processing based on legitimate interests.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We will respond within one calendar month. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
